Steve Yusupov, DDS, MD, FACS, has advanced training to manage a wide scope of malignant as well as benign tumors within the head and neck region. Their team uses cutting-edge digital technology to guide the reconstruction at the same time as the tumor surgery. Tumors Q & A

What are benign tumors?

Noncancerous growths can arise in the upper or lower jaw bones. Unlike cancerous tumors, benign masses can appear at any age, including in young patients. The best treatment for benign jaw tumors is surgical resection. Many times, a significant portion of the jaw is removed with the tumor. Dr. Yusupov specializes in the reconstruction of these defects, many times with the ability to replace the teeth at the same time.

Only a select few oral surgeons in the tri-state area are trained in oral cancer management. Dr. Yusupov spends part of his time in hospital settings, treating patients with tumors and completing simple and complex surgeries.

What are malignant tumors?

Malignancy is synonymous with oral cancer. The most common type of oral cancer is Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Other types of oral cancer such as minor salivary glands can occur in the oral cavity as well. The mainstay treatment for all of these is surgical removal. Many times removing lymph nodes from the neck is necessary. This is known as neck dissection. Similar to benign tumor resection, Dr. Yusupov performs immediate reconstruction for these defects as well.

What happens during tumor removal surgery?

These types of operations are performed in hospital settings. Many times diagnostic scans may need to be performed, all of which will be arranged by Gold Coast staff.

Follow your post-care instructions and see Dr. Yusupov as directed for all follow-up appointments.
